I’m a big shrimp fan and love having it as an appetizer so when I found these Sato Asian Fare Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura Nests at Costco I decided to pick them up to review for all the other shrimp lovers!

Cost

I paid $18.79 Canadian for the 1.13 kg box that has 36 tempura shrimp nests.

Sato Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura Nests Cooking Instructions

Convenience

The box comes with one big bag of the shrimp and vegetable tempura nests and four decent sized dipping sauces. The bag unfortunately is not resealable once opened so you need an elastic or pin. There are two methods to cook these listed on the box, deep fry or oven method. I used the oven method but I best those who have an air fryer could definitely air fry these. They were super easy to heat up in the oven and turned out great. The best before date is about a year and a half from the date we purchased these.

Taste

Four of us enjoyed these and no one had any complaints. The flavor is similar to the flavor of green onion cake mixed with a deep-fried shrimp. These are basically moderately sized shrimp that are sitting on top of an onion ring. The ingredients list states there’s carrot and kale but you mostly just taste the shrimp and onion. They turned crispy and golden brown in the oven and had a nice crunchy texture. Also, the shrimp wasn’t at all fishy or rubbery tasting.

Everyone really enjoyed these, even my husband who actually really doesn’t like shrimp. I think these would be a perfect appetizer for the upcoming holiday season.

Cost: 7.5/10

Convenience: 9/10

Nutrition: 3/10 (shrimp is healthy, right?)

Taste: 8.5/10

Do you have a favorite appetizer you buy from Costco to serve during the holiday season?

  1. Just an FYI. We bought the (on sale) Beef Stew. The instructions were completely incorrect (not re-heated enough) despite using a 1200 oven and they based their instructions on a 1000 watt oven. Also, the meat was really tough. Don’t waste your money, dear.

  2. Could you please highlight Costcos Gluten Free options.
Great review of products and I especially liked pics off box or bag with ingredient and cooking instructions – so clear.
    Again, good job. Stay safe.
